The Windows Firewall is turned on by default in Windows XP service pack 2. If you don't have sevice pack 2 installed yet I strongly reccomend doing so. You can download and install this by going to the Microsoft Downloads area and doing a quick search for the service pack. It is free so and has a lot of great new features and safety mechanisims. Go here:

http://www.update.microsoft.com

When it asks if you want to do Express or Custom just click Custom, as this enables you to view and select "optional" update items which are not shown in the Express method. Express shows only the most critical updates while Custom offers non-critical, but often important options for updates. I always select Custom and then hide any which I feel is irrelevent to my personal needs. You can choose to "hide" any updates you decide you don't need or want for your system. You can also select to "show" updates you have chosen at a prior date to hide, so hidding them does not remove them permently. If you later change your mind about any individual update you have hidden you can easily go back and select it and install it.

Service Pack 2 for Window XP is chalk full of great security enhancements, including the better firewall. You can also go to the Service pack 2 support site on the Microsoft Websites to learn about all the new features, such as enhanced spam and popup blockers, increased browser security by stopping websites from automatically downloading any code or programs without your permission first, and many other enhancements. I stongly urge any who do not yet have this Service Pack to get it as it really helps keep a system much more secure.

To turn on the Windows Firewall:

Start-Control Panel-Security Center. When the Security Center opens click on Windows Firewall, and then select Turn On (Reccomended).

If you actually had a specific setting in mind you needed assistance with, and not just turning on the firewall, then add that to your post so others can address it.

Good luck and have a great evening and Happy Hollidays!
