Best socket 754 CPU?

Question

I really don't feel like upgrading my motherboard/CPU/ram quite yet. I am interested in the conroe, but if I wait a year or two, I know the prices will go down and something new will be out. Anyway, I have a sempron 2800+ and it was fine for gaming until the beast that we call oblivion came around. So I was wondering what is better suited for oblivion but still socket 754?
I would also prefer if it was close to $100

There really isn't much I can't find for a 754. I might as well give in to upgrading my mobo X_X

Athlon 64 3400+. It is a little faster than the one the second guy recommended, Newegg doesn't actuall sell every processor in existance.

By the way, our first answer was given by the number one answerer in this category, unfortunately he should really stick to software. You will never, let me say that again, NEVER find and AMD socket LGA775. AMD and Intel each use their own sockets, and the lines are never crossed. That is an unbreakable rule of computer hardware, an AMD socket will only take AMD CPUs and Intel socket will only take Intel CPUs.

First, you have to learn what your motherboard will accept, as far as speed and CPU.

I would not expect to see the conroe adapted for Socket 754. Only AMD Semperon, AMD Turion, or AMD Athlon.

Controe could be Intel Dual Core and Xeon. You might find a motherboard that will support some LGA 775 chips that are both Intel and AMD. But that is not the direction that I would go in. I would pick pure Intel or pure AMD and go that way.

The only half decent processor left for 754 is the Athlon 64. It is availiable here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103605 . It will do more than any of the semprons will and it will run vista a lot better, and, in the this case, at all. However, if you want to build a conroe system, then you should wait to get vista and get it for that system because anything with a conroe will totally own any Athlon system.

There are a couple of Turions availiable but those are laptop processors.

You are looking for a board that can run Intel Pentium 4 since the 754 is a socket for Pentium 4, not very many are still being made.
