Wait, are you asking why people blame the economy for the individual decision to sit in the streets or in a car on the streets? Abdication of responsibility, that's my answer. The world is full of need for service, and any person who refuses to serve is a very selfish one indeed.

If I were homeless, I certainly wouldn't be blaming other people, or the economy for my condition. I would be working every waking hour so that my lack of a home would only be evident in my sleep. I would put that money toward a good house or apartment in a good neighborhood as soon as possible. And I wouldn't be limiting my job opportunities only to those offered by employers.

It is not. Not entirely anyway. There are many educated homeless people that got into drugs and ruined their own life, which was economically sound. Some lost their jobs and after unemployment ran out, there was nothing to do but take to the streets. It is very common here in Daytona. There are also those that choose to live on the streets, no worries , no fuss. In this city there are quite a few that work on a day to day cash basis, get themselves some food, cigs, beer and a cot for the night, they say it makes them feel free, and many have well to do families.

In a sense homelessness is a result of economic structures. The economic structures make it difficult for the mentally ill to prosper or even maintain a level of survival that includes a home. And somewhere around two thirds of the homeless are mentally disabled in one form of mental illness or another.

There are almost as many reasons for being on the streets as there are people out there.
In college I volunteered at a homeless shelter. There were people there who had simply lost their jobs, others who were deaf.... A lot of people do live paycheck to paycheck and that is one reason. But there are also the mentally ill, who have no family members to care for them, people with alcohol or drug addictions....

Because it's easier than getting off one's butt, getting a job, keeping said job, and setting and reaching goals. Yes, there are many variables that could make a person homeless, but there are also many blessings and decisions in this life that can keep you from being so.

Where you're at is just a starting point. Where you go from here is up to you.

I like to think that people realize that homlessness has many many causes. I work with the homeless population and from what I've seen one of the major factor in homlessness is having a mental illness and not being on medication for it. I have seen so many clients that come in to shelter, get on their medication, and do great. At least until they stop taking it again.....

I don't. I believe it also has to do with strength of mind, unfortunate circumstances, and really bad luck.

I do believe, however, that the homeless could help themselves more often than not.

I don't believe that. I think there are many variables and many reasons why a person may be or may become homeless.
