Music is always under a state of change, whether we like it or not. We don't want our music to sound like our parent's music, and it shouldn't. The sound has changed.....in some cases, it's harsher and harder, with a lower premium on musicianship. In other cases, it's nothing but fluff.
MTV was partially responsible for placing more emphasis on looks, rather than the music.
The recording industry has also changed, becoming more consolidated and financially conservative. They're looking for a sure thing. Why sign an ugly rock band when you can sign a bunch of pretty faces that may be less talented, but can sell albums on their looks alone.
FM changed from being "broadcasters" to "narrowcasters", with strict playlists and formats.
Try XM or Sirius satellite radio for discovering newer groups. I love XM, and can always find something I like, whether it's unsigned bands, blues, rock, metal, or urban.

It's been coming to that point. It's not how talented you are, it's how you look and who you know (and who you do). In Nashville, they have waiters and waitresses that are just waiting to be discovered. They're waiting on tables making minimum wage, and their so much more talented than the big country stars these days. The bad thing about it is either their too ugly, too fat, or just don't have the right "pull" to get them started. It's a waste of humanity. I am told it's the same thing in L.A. and Hollywood.
