I know I am not going to enjoy Christmas as funds are very low and I will be in debt after, same as last year, can't seem to dig my way out, and believe me, I'm not a spendthrift.

I know what your all going to say, your health is more important, well I know that, but that's not too great either.

Just totally p..... of with life generally, makes you wonder what it's all about really.

Anyone in the same boat, and feel the same?

Yes, my bf and I are having our first x-mas and we don't even have a tree. I ended up using some of our grocery money to bake cookies for our friends, but thats it.
We are grateful to be able bodied and have a place to live and to have each other, but for a holiday that is increasingly about spending and less about goodwill (Try being a cashier this time of year, nothing merry about that) it is hard to be so tight on money when you'd like to participate. Especially when its like that all year and you'd really like to cut loose once in awhile.
And saying anything negative about the season is like walking into your own bear-trap. Someone automatically labels you shallow and godless for not focusing on the "reason for the season" So yes, I absolutely feel the same as you.

I try to find something small to look forward to like a day off or getting my towel fresh out of the dryer after a shower. And I'm hoping to go further my education someday and get a better job, so you could try visualizing this as temporary. It may really help.

My finances are alright, but there's too much of an emphasis on buying presents and not enough on the spirit. But back to you: Do a grab-bag and a pot luck supper with family and friends, and make a resolution to call a good financial advisor and get yourself out of debt in 2007. In January, start up a Christmas fund that you deposit money into on a regular basis. Come Christmas 2007, you will find yourself in a better position financially for the holidays. Cheers!

I think it's a good thing if you can set a limit on spending, as in $5 on each person....maybe they would enjoy a lb bag of dunkin donuts coffee....2/$10.... or a nice candle.... or a box of their fav chocolates on sale. I do understand what you are saying, believe me. Sometimes it's hard enough just to scrape by the rest of the year, and here comes christmas. I enjoy christmas for what it is; family getting together and sharing togetherness and love, but it can be hard, because, let's be honest, it's the norm in most families to give and receive gifts, and personally, I think it's part of the joy of christmas, but not the only part. It can just be plain hard. It's hard digging your way out... good luck

I feel the same. I have been trying to shift my thoughts onto what is important about Christmas, the spirit of giving (especially sharing with those really in need), being thankful and spending time with loved ones, but it is difficult when everyone around me seems focused on giving and receiving expensive gifts - except for the ones in genuine poverty - and I feel obliged to rack up my credit card.

Health problems too (and possibly some SAD) - they don't help at all.

I found myself without a lot of funds this year also. I couldn't go out and spend, spend, spend, But I do have a lot of Things accumulated in my home. I just took some of these "things" and gift wrapped them. All nice stuff. Makes me feel good to give some"thing". The other thing is my church, I will be attending your church tomorrow morning and tomorrow night. Jesus is the REASON for the SEASON.

Many are in the same boat...the fact that America has a negative savings rate is probably solely due to Christmas spending.
