4 bases means about 64 different codons, which relate to 20 odd amino acids. A protein can contain thousands of amino acids, and the exact order determines the properties of the protein. So there are a gazillion different possibilities for building a protein using just the four bases as a code.

the variety of proteins formed is due to the different sequences of amino acids which are the building block of proteins
each amino acid is coded by a set of 3 bases
as there are 4 bases, the no. of ways in which they can be arranged in groups of 3 is 64
so there are 64 amino acids.
and these 64 amino acids can combine in soooooooooooo many ways to give rise to soooooooooooo many proteins.
