the wise men apparently were the only ones to see the star. perhaps they were astrologers. they would have known where to look in the sky for the star. (st. matthew 2:5)"And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: For thus it is written by the prophet." the wise men came from the east." if they were astrologers of some sort they would have been watching the sky toward bethlehem for just such a sign. something that would not have been apparent to someone who is not knowledgeable in astrology. the bible doesnt state that anyone else saw the star except the wise men. as for the shepherds...(St. Luke 2:8-18) "8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them."
so the shepherds did not see the star, they were told by an angel of the Lord. the townspeople did not see the star, the shepherds told them about it.

The wise men were actually astrologers who were following a phenomenon in the sky which might have been a nova. Today's astronomers think that what they saw was 2 planets so close together they appeared as one. Anyway, the wise men followed the "star" without knowing its significance re Christ's birth.

Herod did know of its significance & he sent out spys to find & kill Jesus but, according to the Bible, when they did they believed he was the Messiah & they ran away without following orders. Herod then ordered all baby boys up to 2 yrs old in Bethelem be slaughtered (This really happened). But the Holy Family had already fled the city.

The three wise men (or Kings from the East) were not the only people who knew of the birth of Jesus. The sudden appearance of the Star of David (I think that is what it is called) was witnessed by shepherds and large numbers of town people. However, the three wise men knew and understood the significant of the star and sought out the baby Jesus. King Herod sought to destroy and kill the baby Jesus because he believed that this baby would one day wage war against him, kill him, and take the throne as "the King of the Jews," which was a station appointed Heriod by the Romans. King Heriod was not as foolish as the Egyptian Pharaoh (Pharaoh Ramses) as to order a mass killing of Jewish children or walk into a Jewish household and kill a child. If he had he would have deepened Jewish hatred of Romans and himself and brought imitate rebellion and civil war.

There wasn't really a star to see, but the wise men had been eating hallucinogenic mushrooms so they, and no one else, saw what they saw.
