The manufacturers actually add oils to the wax and that oil evaporates into the air as the wax burns. You can tell how richly scented the candle is by how much of a "bloom" appears on the wick. The bigger the black bended down excess there is...the more scent that was placed in the candle. You can also make a candle last longer by placing it on a warming plate and not burning it at all. The oils are still released, but the wax does not burn away and the candle's scent lasts.

well technically they smell b/c they are scented but I belive I know what you are really asking....... b/c people put oils, perfumes, etc( things that smell good) in the beaded wax then the wax absorbes the "liquid" and wala you have a smell good scented candle

Scented oils are added to the melted wax before they are poured into molds or dipped. They can use use either natural oils or man-made oils which can be anything from baby powder to irish coffee.
