And they say women are the better communicators! Sorry had to rant.
Speak to the guy, no hidden or ambiguous statements be frank. "I'd like us 2 b friends but no more." If he can't handle that then he would've been a lousy friend anyway.

The best thing to do in this situation is to be forward. Simply go up to him and talk to him. I know your prob scared or shy, but you're not going to get abywhere this way. Good Luck!

just walk up to him and say hi, you might not be able to say much the first time, but if you keep saying hi each time you see him, sooner or later you will build up the courage to have a conversation with him and hopefully become friends.
