AIM is AOL Instant Messenger:
http://www.aim.com/
However, you don't have to use AOL's program for chatting. Some programs like Trillian:
http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/
or Kopete (if you use Linux):
http://kopete.kde.org/
allow you to chat with AIM users. You just have to set up an AIM account with AOL, which is free.

AOL Instant Messenger. I have AIM and Yahoo Messenger. Half of my family is on Yahoo, and the other half is on AIM. They work the same as far as IM-ing goes.

AIM is the AOL Instant Messenger. Basically it's like text messaging on your cell only on your computer. You can get it at http://www.aim.com but I'd recommend using gAIM instead because it does not come with any crap (advertisements, bundled software) and dosn't slow your PC down as much. It also works seemlessly with anyone who uses the crappy AOL version. =) If you choose gAIM it's here: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php You should also know that they are both completely free to use. Good luck, I hope this helps!
