I was wondering how often I will need to have the local currency? For example, taxi, bar and food bill, hotel bill, stores? Obviously, the less money changed is better since there is always a charge to convert.

Yes you can but it is a hastle and you will be put in positions that personally you will not get a good rate. The money changers on the corner will probably cheat you. Go to a bank when you get to Costa Rica and change dollars or take an atm card at use it at the atms.

if you're talking about visiting the states... it depends on the city... here in NYC, you can actually pay for everything you listed with a credit card... so no money needed. yes, even the taxis take credit card.
