Set up a system of equations:
2x-y=5
x+2y=8
Solve for x and y.

First make two equations (a is the 1st # and b is the 2nd #):
2a - b = 5
2b + a = 8
Find one of the variables by putting A or B by itself on one side using one of these two equations. I will use the second since it is the easiest:
2b + a = 8
a = -2b + 8
Now we know a = -2b + 8 so we substitute a in the first equation with -2b + 8:
2(-2b + 8) - b = 5
-4b + 16 -b = 5
-5b = -11
b = 11/5
Now we know B is 11/5 or 2+1/5 we put it back in one of the equations:
2(11/5) + a = 8
22/5 + a = 8
a = 8 - 22/5
a = 8 - 4 - 2/5
a = 4 - 2/5
a = 18/5

x=3.6
3.6+2y=8
2y=4.4
y=2.2
the numbers are 3.6 & 2.2
