Hey, I live in Georgia, but I'm interested in going to a university in southern California, when I went there this past summer I just fell in love with the state. Has anyone ever gone this far away from home? I also know people in Cali aren't exactly as "friendly" as people here in the south, so I'm wondering if any college students there be nice enough to open their arms to me even if they don't know me. Does anyone have a friend that goes to an out-of-state college? Any suggestions on universities in southern Cali?

Consider going to a college in northern california (like UC Berkeley, Stanford University, UCSF, SF State, Santa Clara University, or USF). I think people in northern CA are much more friendly than people in southern CA. Also, northern CA is a lot nicer than southern CA.

If you really to go to school in southern CA, UCLA, USC and UCSD are good schools in southern CA to go to.

A lot of schools will be able to to tell you how many of their students come from out of state, or how many students commute from home. If there are a lot of students that live on campus or come from out of state, then you know that there will be a lot of students like you who will also be new to the area and looking for friends. I always recommend visiting a college in person if you can before committing to go there. You can tell a lot about the atmosphere by being there in person.

And people from Southern California might be less "friendly" in general than people are in the South, but speaking as a Californian, people here vary a lot just like they do everywhere. You'll find friendly and unfriendly people here, just like everywhere. I always heard Southern Californians were rude, but when I moved here, I found it wasn't really that different then Northern California or Texas where I lived before; strangers might not rush to open a door for me here, but I find that people aren't blatantly rude and unwilling to make friends.

Also, being from out of town can actually help you make friends. I lived in Northern California and went to Texas for college. I found that being from far away made people want to talk to me because they wanted to know what it was like where I lived. One difficulty to think of, though, is whether you'll be able to afford to fly home to visit your family very often. It can be difficult if all your friends go home to visit family over Thanksgiving weekend, and you can't afford to fly home until Christmas.

Lots of students in California go back east to some of the Ivy League colleges, and people come to the UC system from all over the world esp. to the Berkeley campus. There are so many state and community colleges to choose from. You need very high grades for the UC system.

Rule number 1: Don't call it, "Cali" Do people call your state Georgy? People in California are not particularly nice, especially in Southern California. Most of them down there are shallow, materialistic and most college students down there commute from home, so they are not particularly interested in making new friends. That being said, I am sure you can find some exceptions to this. I would recommend either UC Santa Cruz (really northern CA) or UC Santa Barbara

My first piece of advice is -- don't call it 'Cali.' That is a sure sign that you don't belong there.

My second piece of advice is that your take on Californians is absolutely correct. They aren't as nice as people in the South -- or anywhere else.

I have lived in eight states. California is the only one I hated.

If you must go there -- go to as good a school as you can. The best ones in Southern California are UCLA, Cal Tech, UCSD and USC.

I recommend the San Diego State University which is the school I attend. But it all depends on what you want to major in, how much you want to pay, etc.
