Because it's human nature to live up (or down) to what is expected of us. And the loudest voice we listen to is "ourselves." If you're not self-disciplined, and most schools teach nothing about this, and most employers capitalize on lack of it in their people, you'll avoid pain and pursue pleasure all your life, never have real success, always be broke and take orders from a boss, and always be nudged around by circumstances, and basically be miserable and useless to anyone close to you who gets in true financial need. I didn't spend anything on Xmas presents this year, and it had a lot to do with who I chose to take my advice from and who I chose to associate with. Living beyond one's means is a fool's way of deceiving him-or-herself that life is not so difficult after all. But the truth is, life is hard; life is not fair, success demands sacrifice and hard effort, smart effort, and overcoming one's character weaknesses. Worried about what others will think of you? That's the "crabs in a bucket" syndrome; it is to be overcome, just like failing to keep financial records and plans, and failing to set goals and hold yourself accountable to them!!
