1. Woody Guthrie's 'This Land Is Your Land' (with the 'private property' verse) 2. Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine.' 3. Glenn Miller's 'In the Mood.' 4. Otis Redding's 'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay' 5. Scott Joplin's 'The Entertainer.' Would not put 'Over the Rainbow,' 'You Are My Sunshine,' 'White Christmas,' or 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' anywhere near this list. Also, why the heck are The Rolling Stones (as a British band) on the list of American music? 'Satisfaction' is a great song, but it doesn't fit the criteria. I'd also like to submit Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man,' Charles Ives' 'Three Pieces in New England,' Bobby Troup's 'Route 66,' Sam Cooke's 'A Change is Gonna Come,' Janis Joplin's 'Mercedes Benz,' Arlo Guthrie's 'Alice's Restaurant,' Vaughn Monroe's 'When the Lights Go On Again,' CSNY's 'Ohio,' Pete Seeger's 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone,' and Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone.' I'd also echo captain futility's suggestion: Jimi Hendrix's version of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' definitely belongs in the top five.
