I plan on moving to California and going to school at San Fransisco State University next semester. I've been trying to find moderate places to live that are on the Bart system so I can communte.

I've narrowed it down to Hayward, Concord, and Pittsburg. Does anyone have advice on any of these places?

Why did you choose those places? Cheaper rent? I would say just live in San Francisco. Live in Sunset, SFSU is very close. If you don't mind living in like a downstair unit, you can rent a place about 700 to 800. With the money that you spent on Bart ticket, it might even out.

The weather in San Francisco is usually pretty temperate around 65-70 most of the time because of the natural AC, the ocean and the bay breezes. San Jose gets up to 100 degrees in summer and is smoggy. Both are expensive to live in. San Jose requires driving a car, it is spread out like Los Angeles only very small by comparison. Your job usually determines where you will live. There are a lot of towns between SJ and SF, which are 55 miles apart. If you live downtown SJ there is a light rail. I think your job opportunities if you are in high tech are better in SJ. The dozen or so towns between the two cities are mostly bedroom communities and the weather is pretty sunny. When you move out here, you should rent a furnished place temporarily while looking around. Traffic is heavy for commuting and trains are expensive, so you really cant decide long distance. Both cities have what you are asking for. San Jose has a bigger population. Every city has crime but San Jose has more of it. Every city has good and bad areas but San Francisco has the least dangerous areas. There are very few low income areas there because it is expensive. DUKE: I tried to give them a realistic idea of both cities. Are you upset because I was too easy on San Jose or too harsh? Why did I get 2 thumbs down? WILL: Why did you laugh at my answer? San Jose has more crime than San Francisco. I dont hate San Jose. I was trying to be objective in my answer. I lived in San Jose in Willow Glen and I live near San Francisco right now. I basically said the same as you but more condensed.

Obviously you left out Oakland, but for your own protection I suggest living somewhere close to the downtown area or North Oakland. The major city still good to live in (unless U have kids), it just doesn't get the respect it deserves cuz it's underrated.
