An ISO file is a copy of a CD. You use a CD burning software (such as Nero, Roxio, PowerISO, etc) to open it. It will then burn a working CD of whatever program (movie, etc) you downloaded.

An .iso image is basically a file that has a cd on it. For example, you could take everything on your Windows XP cd, and convert it to an .iso file to either send to someone or to burn onto another cd.
To use it, you can either install Nero, double click the icon and it will automatically take you to the burn menu to make a new cd/dvd.
Or you can get a program called Deamon tools (search it online) install DT, then right click the icon in the taskbar and choose mount image. If its an iso of a dvd, you can open Windows Media Player for exaple to watch it. All depends whats on the iso file!!
