All you need is a high speed internet connection (DSL or Cable), and an Xbox 360 with an Xbox Live account.
Yes, you can unplug the ethernet cable that goes to your pc and use it with your 360. I used to do it all the time, before I had a router to share internect connections to multiple pc's/consoles.

You need a connection to internet in order to use xbox live.
