Opposites that complement each other. Yang is high, yin is low. A Spoon is yin, a knife is yang. Light is yang, darkness yin. Yang is ascending, yin descending. Male is yang, female yin. But men have also yin: being quiet, whenever they are, and women yang: being active, whenever they are. So activity is yang and resting is yin. Having a baby inside is yin, giving birth is yang. Speaking yang, thinking yin. Horizontal yin, vertical yang. Receiving is yin, giving yang. The earth is yin, the sun yang. The front of the body is yin, the back yang. Writing this is yang, reading it yin, but I am seated, which is yin, and you could be standing, which is yang. Fire yang, water yin, but water coming out of a pipe with great pressure is "yanger" than that of a river.

I think the original yin-yang was a dragon(gods) and a tiger(earth) that looked like they were chasing each other. It represents the balance between the divine and the mortal.
