Anti-depressants are, I believe, unnecessary. Most people who are on them could likely help themselves through reading, counseling, and reflection. Personal development is the key. There are some people who need medication, but the number on medication is higher than those who actually need it. (Brought myself out of depression without meds.)
As for drugs, do you mean illegal drugs? I think they should be somewhat decriminalized. I also think there's no point to them. Life is pretty mind-altering as it is.

Counseling alone does not always work. I speak from experience. I had severe post partum depression and no amount of counseling helped me until I started taking anti-depressants. Depression is serious, and if drugs are needed to help, by all means - take them!! I'm not taking them anymore, but I know they helped a lot. It was difficult weaning off them, but it was worth it to stop all the crying, feeling worthless, etc. Hopefully if you are experiencing depression you'll contact your doctor immediately.

Medicines can help some people but doctors need to tell the patient how and when to wean off of the drug and manage that part of the care very, very well. The same holds true for the side effects. Sometimes they have no idea of the side effects of the drug they are prescribing or they don't believe you when you tell them.
These are the only problems I see.

I believe they are good to an extent but some people are on so many unnecessary pills and perscriptions...since everybody's depressed these days its pretty much abnormal to meet someone who's not on a kind of anti-depressant

well that depends on what type of drugs your talking about. Whether your talking about the ones for recreation or something else. I used to take anti depressants when i was a teen and they used to totally zone me out like a zombie. I hate them, but they have their benefits for people with brain chemical imbalances.

I think it is better to solve your problems without them. I don't think they should be used for long periods of time by the average depressed person.
But I also see the need for them and the tremendous boost that they can bring in treatment of depression. So I think they are good for short term.
but this is also an individuals decision. and I would respect whatever you choose for yourself...or whoever...

If a person seriously needs them, I'm all for it. I just don't like it when a perfectly healthy person who is down on their luck in some areas feel like they need the drugs. It's part of life. I understand completely some people have chemical imbalances and such...that's when drugs should become available.

They don't always help because they do have side-effects. I think the best anti-depressant would be counseling

I have known people who couldn't live w/o them and others who abused them.
I think they are a tool for the really ill.
I also think they are prescribed too often instead of finding the root of the problem.
