The candidates are Pele, Maradonna, Best, Cryuff and Beckenbauer.
Maradonna for his wonder goal against England - cool!
Best for his close control - like the ball was on a string.
Cryuff for his inspiration and innovation.
Beckenbauer for his control and power.
But I'm gonna go with Pele for his exploits in the 1970 World Cup in particular.

Robin Friday - he was to Rock what George Best was to Pop.
He come from the pub after 8 pints, come with Cardiff 3-0 down bang 5 in ...... then go back to pub..... sheer genious.
The one where he sits on the goalkeepers head with his bare bum after scoring the goal of the season is a classic.

a lot of people would say it's between pele and maradona, and that maradona would shade it because he won trophies in quite average teams like napoli and argentina in the 80s.But I think you can't rule out zidane. modern football is so much faster and teams are so much better organised but he has had the power and ability to dribble past teams with ease and score amazing goals at the highest level- that winner in the champs league final in 2002 was incredible.

There were so many.
English - Bobby Charlton
Irish - George Best
Scottish - Kenny Dalglish
Argentinian - Diego Maradona
Brazilian - Pele
But George Best was the best!

Hmmm best footballer in my lifetime??
well i'm 32, and i would say.... maradona as a non english
player.... and the best english player...hmmm maybe glenn hoddle...but if paul gascoigne didnt go down the road that he did...
then he could've been one of the greatest ever english players to grace a pitch....

Bobby Bouchet.
Not only a great player on the field, but also a great humanitarian. He always managed to provide his teammates with fine, high quality H20.
