You have to do it or eventually they'll get you. Look, we have more trees now than we did in the mid 1800s. If we hadn't been killing them all these years they would be growing right in the middle of our dens - heck, they'd be growing right through our computers. You should be glad that there are far-sighted people in the world who have taken up the challenge to battle and kill this insidious tree invasion. Without this brave cohort group we would not only be between a rock and a hard place but likely between two very closely growing trees. And, that wouldn't be good. Surely you can see that.

drill holes and pour in round up. Make sure u can get the poison into the holes as soon as possible after you've drilled them... seconds count here. Then you can rub dirt and stuff over the holes to make them look a bit more like something it just easting the tree. Be careful about putting anything into the soil if you're planning on replanting the area. Things like salt could wipe out your chance of getting anything else to grow.

remove the bark all the way around the tree, it doesn''t need to be any more than a 1 inch strip but it needs to circle the entire trunk. this will stop the flow of moisture up the tree and kill it. Good luck with the tree hugger Nazi's

Remove the bark all the way around the tree at the base. It really works. My father did this by accident to an oak tree. He got a little too close with the weed eater.

Get about 10 or 15 pounds of rock salt and pour it around the trunk. The rain will carry it to the roots and the tree will die.
You can get rock salt at your supermarket . It is used to make ice cream.

Is the tree of some historical significance?
That might make it difficult to remove. It could cause a negative consequence if they find out you damaged it.
Is it interfering with power lines?
This might be a option, unless it is a historical aspect of your city, town etc.
