It is an imaginary line only insofar as it is invisible.
The equator is more correctly an abstract entity, and a necessary logical consequence of the fact of the Earth being a sphere that spins on an axis.
The equator must exist at every point on the sphere that is 90 degrees from either pole of the axis.
If the Earth is round and it spins, the equator, axis, and poles *must* also exist in order to be logically consitent.
(Do you need to see your brain in order to know that you think?)

The equator is not a political line, meaning that it is not were it is today to act as a boundary. The equator is the midpoint between the two poles of a planet, north and south pole. The pole is the axis around which a body spins.

It is the point on the earth where you spin the fastest as the earth rotates. Think of it like this, at the poles you'd just do little tiny circles once a day, but at the equator you are moving 1000 miles per hour.

It is an imaginary line, just like all lines of latitude and longitude. The only way you would know its there is if a signs says it or you have a GPS device or map.

it has a little more reality than our imaginary border lines. one can observe the idea of the eqautor as the seasons do not change in those parts of the world. and the suns route across the sky should not change through the year.

The first time I flew to Australia from the US, a steward looked out the window after a few hours and announced "There's the equator!" - and half the people in the plane got up to look!

This so called line is like the line that is between the U.S. and Mexico. Everyone knows it is there but the Mexicans refuse to acknowledge it.
