You are correct. If it is exactly as his father's name, he gets a Jr. suffix to his name; Dad adds Sr. to his name.
If he is named exactly as his grandfather, or any other grandfather in the direct line, he gets II for a suffix, If his father and grand father have the same name it would be Senior, Junior, and then III (the third).

You can do it either way. My brother's name is Michael Joseph G. and his son's name is Michael Joseph G. II. He didn't want him to be a Jr. And to differentiate the two I always call my nephew either Little Mike or Michael 2.

You use Jr or II (either one) for naming after the father and III if the grandfather and father had the same name and naming 3rd generation after both of them.

Jr.
my husband has the same exact name as his dad, with a different middle initial, and he's got no suffix.

it's junior if you name the child the same name as the father.
it's II if you're naming your child the same name as someone you know. it's only considered II tho if the child's last name is the same last name as the person that you're naming him/her after.

Either way is correct.
But I would advise you NOT to use junior. My father was a junior, and he was called Junior all his life. Many people didn't even know his real name.

It's junior until there's a third. Then, it becomes II and the grandson becomes III.
