As the name suggests, the bus powered USB hub derives its power from your computer's bus, that is, your computer's internal power supply. That's fine if you have only a few low-power devices on the hub. However, if you have several devices and they draw a lot of power, you can overtax your bus's ability to provide power. That's where a self-powered hub is useful. It usually has a trabsformer than plugs into the wall or your power bar and draws whatever current it needs from there. Frequent errors with your USB devices on a bus-powered hub suggest that you're trying to load too many power draining loads on the hub. A self-powered hub is usually a safer choice as adding a hub suggests that you're planing to add a number of devices to a single USB port.

A bus powered USB hub draws power off the usb port and won't run as many devices or as many types of devices. A self powered hub supplies all the devices plugged into it with power from an ac power supply that is attached to it, so you don't have to worry about drawing too much power from the computer's usb port.

Please keep in mind most devices dont drain even a fraction of a watt, and your pc puts 5watts to any unpowered hub. When USB device jepordizes a hub in design they usually include an adapter. So if your devices dont come with one rest assured you dont need to spend the extra bucks or use up 2 spaces on your surge protector consistantly wasting power and floor space.
