It's one of the life games that people play. So I guess it's REALLY how you look at it. To me, it should be like how many think about Christmas- a celebration of Christ, only not his birth but his death and rise. So let's say the egg represents new life and fertility and hiding the eggs makes it fun for kids.

The rabbit was actually in older folklore a hare and it represented springtime fertility because of their tendency to have large multiple births.

The coloring of eggs was first seen among the Greeks. Red was the color of Spring renewal and green of Spring foliage.

As for hiding them, there are several old folk poems of French and Greek origins that refer to stories of eggs falling from the sky or appearing in special baskets woven by children. NO connection to the current custom of hiding it by hand.

All of this is irrelevant since the story of Easter is that of the Resurrection of Christ.

It's based on the Pagan Goddess Eostre (pronounce E-O-stare) also known as Ostara. When Christian leaders attempted to convert Pagans, the wanted as many likenesses in Christian holidays as in Pagan holidays, so they placed them on the dates of the Pagan Holidays. Easter was placed on the Vernal Equinox (When winter becomes spring), Christmas was placed on the Winter Solstice.

Additionally, the Goddess of spring and the vernal equinox was Eostre, she was also sometime represented as a bunny, hence the Easter bunny. She was the also the Goddess of fertility and eggs. So pagan tradition has people decorate eggs and cakes as an offering to Eostre on the vernal equinox. henceforth the eggs that we decorate on Easter

Because eggs resemeble rocks which are non-living but living things spring from them. They are a symbol of rebirth. They are only hidden because children like to hunt for lost objects.

It's prodably because people want children to know how the two women (that went to the tomb Jesus was in) felt when they discovered he wasn't there. They searched for Jesus like we search for eggs.
