Feminist Germaine Greer made a good point. In a society ruled by the dollar, it's not that people can't afford to have children; they can't afford to raise children who go to top schools, get a nice car on their 16th, are entertained by the coolest toys and electronics and wear fancy clothes. The idealized American standard of living is expensive. If we all lived like the old days, especially in agrarian societies (Germaine gave the example of old Italy), when big extended families (including grandparents, cousins, etc.) lived in one household, the old took care of the young and everyone contributed to feeding, educating and clothing their own. Relatively poor, but fed and enriched by the large family. Then again, many from those families couldn't attend college and break into the upper classes, so they continued to live as their predecessors did. As a descendant of a large European immigrant family, this is something I noticed in my own family history. By our American standards, a child faces a bleak future if he doesn't have a chance to become upwardly mobile -- and to many, that means you have to grow up healthy, monied and educated enough to go to college or succeed in a lucrative trade. Well, then again, this whole thing is the reason why so many people came to America from poor nations. They wanted their kids to break out of poverty and become upwardly mobile. And many kids from large poor families had the drive to become some of the most successful people in America today.

Only wealthy are allowed to have children?? There may be specific beliefs regarding birth control. Sometimes people have dreams of big families. It's too easy to say/judge only poor have children they can't afford. I don't think you are ever financially prepared for children!!

It is more than likely the result of one or more issues. For one, I would have to say poor upbringing (lack of proper roll models). Two, eduacational failure (if you know what I mean). Three, a complete lack of integrity in regards to the child who will suffer most of their adolescent life as a result of parental void (which breeds ignorance). Or Four, because the Goverment still makes it appealing financially to have children.
