My son is eight months old. He currently eats stage one and two baby food. He eats baby food once a day, for lunch. Other than that he only gets formula. We are about to start him on a sippy cup. In a few months he'll be completely off formula and eating only solids. He's my first child, so I really have no idea what I'm doing. lol I'm about to start giving him baby food twice a day, for lunch and dinner. We've tried giving him crackers since he has all four of his front teeth in, but he won't swallow them. When he does swallow them he will literally throw it back up to keep himself from swallowing it. What should I do to help him figure out swallowing solids? And what other solids could I feed him now?

My first child had no interest in solids until she was over a year old. I would periodically try different foods, and she would not swallow them. When she was about 13 months old, she was finally able to take solids.

I wouldn't worry about it, and just try a variety of things periodically and eventually he will eat more and more solids. If you are truly concerned about him not getting enough solids, then try offering him a variety of the stage 1 and stage 2 foods more often. He should be okay on mostly formula. I nursed my daughter full time until she started taking more solids, and she did fine.

Hope this is helpful.

One I talked to my doc and he said sippy cups now.. are not that safe to be using.. something with the roof of their mouths.. so I would just let your baby drink out of a small cup... that is what my son does.. or let him drink out of a bottle.. use a water bottle.. they are perfect.. small enough for him... swallowing is a toughy though... if he is eating his baby food good and swallowing.. then i wouldn't worry about feeding him crackers and such right now. At his age right now.. he should be eating baby food for lunch and dinner... with a bottle ofcourse... I would just stick to the baby food and not solids.. but if i would try solids try the puffs.. they disolve in your mouth why the baby is chewing.. makes it easier to swallow and they come in fruit and veggies... other than that i would just be giving him bottle, baby food, and maybe the puffs. My son at 6 months was on the jar food.. and at 6 1/2 months was eating the little dinners.. stage one.. not the ones with the lumps yet... but by 8 months he was on our food already and he hated baby food by then.. besides the fruits and veggies... and sometimes dinners. I also had him eating those bitter biscuits b/c he was teething and those helped out alot. But honestly your son doesnt' need the solids right now.. he can stick to the baby food and formula... water is great.. no juice and such right now.. that is to much sugar for them at this age... i had the same issues though.. i was a first time mom and was worried about everything.. i did the feed them the same food everyday for 5 days .. then tried the next flavor and moved on... wow i have lived and learned from that... don't rush him though.. he will let you know when he is ready for solids and other fun things.. good luck

Go to your local library and check out SUPER BABY FOOD by Ruth Yaron. It not only tells you how to make your own homemade baby food but has a list of age appropriate foods and tons of other helpful info.

And don't worry, babies don't need any teeth to chew solid food.

Don't worry, he'll swallow when he's ready. As long as he's still getting breastmilk or formula (which he should be) he doesn't HAVE to eat solids.

Let him eat with the family and let him have table food! He'll eat what he wants when he wants and that fine, amazingly babies often know whats best for them with us even having to tell them!

I'm sure you're doing fine mom!

Hello...
I have a 9 month old...he gets the following per my doctor's advice:

7:00 am 8 oz bottle-formula
10:00 am small amount of cereal/ 1 jar of stage 2 baby food
12:30 8 oz bottle-formula
3:00 om small amount of cereal/ 1 jar of stage 2 baby food
5:00 pm 8 oz bottle
8:00 pm small amount of cereal/ 1 jar of stage 2 baby food
11:00 pm 8 oz bottle

My doctor said to alternate between bottle and food every meal. Also, DON'T give him crackers, he can choke. He doesn't have the back molars to chew. give him those finger foods that melt in his mouth.

I put my son in his high chair and make sure there's nothing round to distract him...his mouth opens right up when he sees the spoon coming. Just put a small amount on there, they figure it out.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!
