Excellent!
GIVE is the keyword. I feel the exact same way. I want for nothing, and it is not because I have everything. I would just rather see them give to those who really need. Thats what we have been doing for years and it is tough to get the rest of the family to see the same way.
Last year we gave gifts to charity in the names of family members and we hoped that they would do the same. This year we just gave to charities without the aknowlegements.

God bless you and have a very merry Christmas.

Surely you can figure out a way to come up with equally disgusting crap to exchange. Go to Dollar Stores and deep discount stores such as Fred's, Big Lots, Sam's Club, T J Maxx, etc. and shop for clearance stuff. If that's what you are getting, they shouldn't be disappointed to receive the same in return. If you really want to get the point across, save something you got from them the year before and wrap that back up. Perhaps if someone else starts experiencing it the way you have been, they may speak up about ending it. Or, you could "rise above" the whole thing, and continue giving something nice. Though this would be the real "spirit of Christmas" thing to do, I realize that it is very tough to keep doing that year after year one-sidedly. You are right, it is up to your husband to speak up and try to change the tradition on this side of the family. Perhaps if he spoke to his parents and said you guys really couldn't afford it this year (but you'd have to make that believable by scaling back in other area), or if he suggested a change in tradition, such as the drawing names thing or White Elephant/gag gift gift exchange. I always hated these kind of things, too--whether they were at the workplace or among extended family. I feel your pain!

Truthfully- I love the tradition of giving gifts to the ones I love. I enjoy spending the time and effort to make sure I get them just what they want. My family also sponsors a child through the Angel Tree each year- I think it is good for the kids to learn to give to others.

for many years, all the adults picked one person and bought for them...the kids get gifts from everyone. just last year, we decided that it was stupid bc everyone was just going out and buying a gift then giving to the person that picked them, so now just the kids get gifts. much better and easier

oh God, yes. The older I've gotten, the less I want to deal with it. If I want or need something, I buy it, too. I would rather that money be given to charity.

i am tired of shopping for everyone and since everyone is older it's like wha is the point i think adults should not get anything abd the kids get it all.

I am. Most especially if you aren't rich. It's tough. Some just don't get it.
