Hi Waz,
Well there are a number of things that led to this tragedy.
Yes, the steel used was not of a quality that we would expect for a ship of that size but it was the best available at the time with the technology that was available.
The rudder was too small for the size of the ship.
The bulk heads did not go all the way to the topdeck. This would not necessarily have stopped her sinking but would at least have given the rescue ships more time. How much is hard to say.

Well apart from navigation, a sad fact is the ship actually had no binoculars on board!! They had to rely on the lookouts eyesight without being able to see over a great distance. Sad but true.
When the ship was described as unsinkable, they only thought that come the worst that only one compartment would be breached - not multiple ones.
Another factor is that the watertight bulkheads stopped short of deck levels, so when the ship took on water in multiple compartments causing her to go down at the bows at a great angle, the water poured over into the next compartment and so on.

The question is did it sink there is a large number of people who believe the ship was swapped with its sister ship the Olympic who was in Belfast at the same time they swapped them as the Titanic was not ready for the initial voyage

When the iceberg put a hole in the side of the ship the pressure from the water that entered caused the rivets holding the plates together to pop resulting in massive flooding.

There is just no ONE reason the Titanic sank. It was just a bunch of simple events that when added up in the end, caused the sinking. there is no ONE person or thing to blaim for the sinking.
