The definition of an empire is "a political unit having an extensive territory or comprising a number of territories or nations and ruled by a single supreme authority."

I'm not entirely sure if the U.S. falls under this definition because of the "single supreme authority" part.

Anyway, as for the U.S. crumbling, any civilization can and will experience times of prosperity and problems. Considering the average American goes about the day without being directly affect by the political nonsense or the military actions around the world, and considering most Americans have homes and jobs, I think the U.S. is far from crumbling.

Its not as bad as it looks. Yes, Iraq could have been handled differently. No further comment on Iraq. However, look at the recent history of Europe (Europe is chosen only for convenience since lots of different countries are packed so close together) and note down when which country conquered another and how many people died in the process. You will fill up pages with lots of useless bloodshed. America is not as awful military-wise as it could be, given how much power it has. Compare USA and Russia for example.

More on comparison. If "American Empire" is to collapse, then some other countries should fill up the vacuum. Which ones? You will be choosing from a list of far-from-perfect countries to replace the non-perfect America. Just pick a "replacement" country and then ask your friend to play a devils advocate. You will hear far too many reasons for not replacing, as you put it, the "American Empire".

USA is doing quite well economically and it is staying on top of top-notch scientific discoveries. Of course you could criticize and say that NASA is not doing as much as it should. Maybe you are right. But then again - which country does a better job?

One could argue that public schools are not good enough at preparing the future American scientists. Well, there are plenty of private schools, plus well-educated foreigners are gladly entering USA. There are (in the order of) 20,000 graduate students from India who are in line for green card. This number would be much higher if only our government allowed it. But it can't - too many Indians with education are trying to enter USA. Not to mention willing candidates from many other places.

Some smaller countries may be more efficient at implementing projects like: providing public transportation, cell phone coverage, using alternative energy sources. However, they are not that far ahead. No more that few years after some innovation is introduced, implemented and tested in Europe, it also finds its way to USA.

Often it is the other way around. A lot of scientific research originates in America. The National Science Foundation spends around 5 billion dollars per year. (This figure does not include private funding, such as research and development spendings of private corporations. Case and point: pharmaceutical companies)

America is not perfect. It needs to change its foreign policy. There are many selfish, ignorant, counterproductive, criminal and other not-so-good-at-making-the-world-a-better-place sort of people. However, every country faces the same problems, only on different scale and subject to different idiosyncrasies.

To sum up: America continues to be strong, it can and will change for the better. It is entirely possible that within a few decades it will loose its first economical place to other countries, but should still stay in the top 10 (Right now it seems like an unlikely event). AMERICAN EMPIRE IS NOT GOING TO CRUMBLE ANY TIME SOON!

America has began its downward spiral but so many Americans don;t seem to see it or understand it , and that is what is so dangerous , all of the world is laughing at the U,S, because even tho we have pulled them out of the fire several times, they are extremely Jealous of us,some how we have got to convince the American citizen of what is happening and elect a president and other Representatives who will put America first again, we must kick out lawyers from our congress and senate , and elect a business man for a president , Lawyers are never good business men, and running a country is a business, our elected officials must be selected with extreme care to ensure their allegiance is to America, not to Israel or some Muslim country,or any where other than America.

Other countries don't sponge...the Us pokes it's nose in before it's even asked for help. And there isn't an American Empire. It's just one big country, with the rest of the world looking at it and thinking "what ARE you doing?"

Between the ACLU and our overly PC attitudes, it won't be long I suspect. First it was those Imams on the plane but I bet that's just the beginning of it.

Let's "keep it real"! As long as we don't allow any more underachievers like George Bush to steal the Presidency, we should be fine. Oh yeah, we need to convert to an alternative fuel source as well and be more self-reliant as a country.

What a silly question. Who would all those other countries sponge off of if the USA wasn't here to send them aid?
