These energys are built up during flight, do not disappate in space, and takes a series of S curves to disappate during the decent back thru our atmosphere. What are the energys? Why don't they disappate in space? And why the S curves? They must not be harmful energys: Space walks, or is that due to grounding, or lack of?

Pragmatic's answer is very good. By way of elaboration, I would only offer the supporting analogy that the S turns in the shuttle's reentry are much the same as snow skiing back and forth on the way down a mountain side. If you go straight down, you build up far too much speed, so you perform a few back and forth turns to bleed off your speed with friction on the snow.
The energy is primarily kinetic energy. Which is tied to the momentum of the craft and so doesn't dissapate. There is some electrical charge built up but that genrally grounds out the same way aircraft do.

During the ascent there is also friction until out of the atmosphere but then this heath will dissipate by radiation into space.
During the reentry the friction is very much higher and it used to slow down the Shuttle speed from its orbital reentry speed.
Special tiles covering the lower surface get red hot during reentry.
The energy involved is just heath.
The S curves are necessary to slow down until landing will be possible. A straight trajectory would not be long enough to slow down sufficiently.
