What is Emo?

I keep seeing this word Emo on here and don't know what the heck it is? What is it?

Emo is kinda short for Emotional but Emos are the kinda of people who die their hair black and wear odd black clothing, like a goth. most of them are depressed and suicidal. but i can't generalize either, lots of people are Emo just to stand out. I dont wanna sound like a stereotypical person either cause i don't judge people >_> but thats what Emo is in general, i think

Emo is a style of music, as well as a style of dress. Emo music can be characterised by having elements of punk and sometimes pop, and often with screamed lyrics about teenage love and life, often about being misunderstood. Emo bands include Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Fightstar et al.

Emo is short for "emotional" or "emotional hardcore" - reflective of the style of music. Emo is a somewhat perjerative term - a lot of people don't like being called an emo - and a lot of people won't like me describing those bands as emo. Emos are steriotyped as being whiney complainers who slit their wrists (usually for attention) However, like all steriotypes this description is only true of a minority of emos. Many people who listen to emo music or dress in the emo style - long fringes, tight jeans and striped tops are completely unlike this.

emo started out as a genre of music many many more years ago its alot more emotional then others (how they got the name) and its a lot more personal emo turned into a "title" and ppl started saying people that were suicidal and cut their wrists were emo and that is so stupid because alot of people cut there wrists but it doesnt make them emo i know alot of people considered "jocks" and "preps" that cut and it doesnt make them emo emo is just mostly a genre of music showing ALOT of expression and emotion and thats it and i hate people who catigorize its wrong

Emo is the hatred of self. People that are Emo might paint their nails black, cut their wrists, wear depressing clothing, wear depressing makeup, and intentionally get hurt for fun.

emo is a type of dressing style in particular. it's a style created by people dressed in black and who listen to the new wave of punk rock( which generally sucks by the way).
you can also refer to it as emotional punk rock.
emos got themselves the image of being a bunch of depressed wannabe goths.
the girls dressed in style of pink mixed with black, and dye they're hair black.
and the boys come up with hairdos covering their faces and ususally are bisexual.
