Yes it can be, very much so. But if you watch how deep you go with sympathy and guard against the old sympathy for the devil routine. You can be fooled by many if they play upon your sentimentality, but dont lose heart, just try and be objective, not to become overwhelmed with emotional unstable moments in time. Sometimes wait to make decisions till you are over those emotions, that is the wisest thing. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

yes sir'e!

"There's a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there's a little Darth Vadar in all of us. Thing is, this ain't no either or proposition. We're talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can't hide. My experience? Face the darkness, stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. Give that old dark night of the soul a hug! Howl the eternal yes!"

Stuart Stevens, Northern Exposure, Jules et Joel, 1991

Happy Holidays to you all!

Not at all, sentimentality has so much survival value that it has ingrained itself in our emotions. It's an aspect of empathy, which we need to keep from bashing our screaming kids against the wall sometimes. Empathy is so much a part of us that it extends to other creatures that don't have any direct survival value for us.

Knowing that our emotions are biologically based does not detract from their value, either - it makes them more wondrous than ever.
