She went to her check-up last week, and since we think the baby should be at 13 weeks, she was expecting to hear the babies heatbeat. Unfortunately, I had to be at work during this, so I didn;t hear about it until that evening. The nurse practitioner said that it was nothing to worry about, but of course, my wife's pregnant and is worried about it. I love my wife more than I can say, but I'm just not sure how to help.

At 13 weeks, baby is still really little. Therefore your little one has a lot of wiggle room. When she gets further along she'll feel baby kick at the doppler. It doesn't hurt them, but they can feel something being pressed against mom's tummy. My guess is, baby was running from the doppler. If baby was being active at the time, I doubt they would be able to pin him or her down for more than a few seconds anyway. I didn't hear my second one until right after 15 weeks. They'll try again at her next appointment. She'll be able to hear baby then, when it's a bit bigger, and the heartbeat's a little stronger. Good luck and Congrats!

well, I am 16 weeks and I just finally heard my babies heartbeat last week....... With my first pregnancy I heard it earlier, so I was freaking out about it.... but I did finally get to hear it... hearing the heartbeat just makes the whole pregnancy feel more real..... And we women worry about everything.. so I am sure she would worry about this.... It will be ok no matter what.... The other possibility is that she is not as far along as you all think... there is the possbility of ahving another period or 2 after conceiving and an ultrasound will be able to give you an exact date.... so ask to have one scheduled.. it will ease her mind and take stress off you both..... She is very lucky to have such a caring husband like you..... Good Luck!!!

My sis lost her baby at 12 weeks, and she never did get to hear the heartbeat... that is something that could be a possibility, but no matter how it turns out.. there is a reason for everything... and that is what my sis keeps telling herself.... she believes that there was something wrong with the baby and it was taken from her to keep it from having to lead such a hard life.......

At thirteen weeks the baby is still small and has a lot of room to move around. Sometimes they get in a spot that is difficult to hear a heart beat with their doppler. It will be hard to make her feel comforted though. All you do when you are pregnant is worry if the baby is okay. It is just part of being a mom. Until she can see and hold the baby she will be worried

If the doctor or nurse was concerned they would of made sure they found the heart beat. They couldn't hear my babies heart beat at first at 12 weeks and i was only a 105 pounds so it makes it easier to hear the babies heart beat. The doctor went in and moved my uterus up and held the heart thing at the same time to find the heart beat. I have a tipped uterus toward the back so that is why he couldn't hear the heart beat. There are many reasons why they cant hear the heart beat. But if your wife is concerned I would tell her to make another appointment demanding an ultrasound or something so it put her mind at ease.

Brian,

Pregnancy can be trying for all of us.

Just be there... no platitudes, no solutions. Just calm reliability.

If you must, look up pictures of the size the fetus would be at 18 weeks (if I remember correctly) it's not much bigger than a golf ball.

And it is important to remember that between the baby and the outside world is the uterus (which is thickened to nurture the baby), as well as fluid and your demis etc.

There are alot of barriers between the baby and the outside world (which is good for the baby) and if the position is not right even with help someone may not be able to hear the heartbeat just yet.

best wishes, and good luck.

I didn't hear mine until 15-16 weeks! I saw it on the first scan but never saw it until then. As long as the doctor says it's ok then your fine. May baby is over two pounds and a big big boy. I'm 27 weeks pregnant!

That's totally normal. Sometimes the baby isn't in a good spot to hear the heartbeat. Remember, the baby is really tiny right now...at 13 weeks, my daughter was only 42mm long from head to rump. She'll definitely get to hear it by her next appointment.

The same thing happened to me, my husband just kept saying to me don't worry, everything is going to be fine. It made me feel a little better, but I didn't completely stop worrying until I went back to the doctors office the next visit and finally heard the heartbeat. God bless!

With an ultasound scan you can see the heartvalves opening and closing. You can count the vertibrae, measure the length of the bones.

Its more reassuring than anything else.

If the baby has died then she would know quite quickly.

Here's wishing an easy birth (relativly) and healthy mum and baby.

I had the same thing happen to me. I'm not sure there is a lot you can say right now to make it better. How soon does she have another checkup? Just be extra understanding if she is short tempered, or extra sad. Its really tough to be scared something is wrong--whether you have a real basis for it or not. Good luck to the both of you.
