I don't understand how the UN can justify sanctions upon Iraq yet other countries are alowed to pretty much do as they wish.

What (in the opinion of the UN), makes it acceptable for some countries to have nuclear energy/weapons technology and for others (to have it) unacceptable?

I was actually hoping for purely factual answers. I just don't understand why Iran is deemed to be more dangerous than some other countries. Surely it's best to judge a country by it's actions, not rhetoric.

Please try and allow some debate and try not to resort to personal insults.

Remember it's the people who suffer, not the political leaders. I don't see why they should suffer because of the actions of their leader. The same principle applies whichever country one talks about.

The key aspect in this debate is trust or lack of it. Iran is not seen as a Democracy and past bad experiences like the American Embassy hostage debacle and the inferred interference in the Iraq does not play well with some of Iran's neighbours and much of the Western World. The irony is that with Bush and Blair demonising Iran, it only serves to build up the hardliners in the regime. They will by hook or by crook have a Nuclear power AND missile program.

The difference is, that most of the other countries don't have a leader who thinks that murdering anyone who gets in his way is acceptable and if you say he hasn't yet, well that's because no one has stopped him yet you'll see his nasty side come out now the UN have put these sanctions on his country.
If you think His nuclear energy program is for innocent purpose's then you're very much mistaken, all he wants is to have the ability to hurt America or the west
I'm not saying America is right on its Foreign policy, but I thing you'll find that Iran is more wrong in its blinkered view

There are some countries that have already got the weapons long ago but now to stop further spread they are punishing any other countries that are pursuing to prevent them from getting the nuclear weapons. If all the countries have nuclear weapons pretty soon there will be a third world war in which most of the world is likely to be destroyed.

It's called hypocrisy... Iran,as a country that signed the NPT,has every right to nuclear energy,as long as it's used in peaceful purposes...and until now no one could prove other wise...And US gives nuclear weapons to the countries surrounding Iran and tells Iran not to build a nuclear weapon...Nice message US is sending to the whole world...
Iran has the right to have nuclear power, unlike Israel,India and Pakistan who refuse to sign the NPT...and still have nuclear weapons. It seems that no one cares about that, because they have the blessing of US to own them...
Iran does not agree with US policies, does not agree with Bush,so they have to be a danger for all the world...since it seems that Bush decides who is good and who is bad in this world...
Instead of focusing on finding imaginary reasons to attack Iran we should be more worried about Israel now, since last summer they used uranium bombs in Lebanon...Or about what India and Pakistan can do to each other, since they are not in very friendly relationships...

UN bans the import and export of materials and technology used in uranium enrichment for reprocessing and ballistic missiles. I have even wondered the same thing. I even wrote to government officials so they could explain it to me. I never heard back. My guess is if the Iranians do obtain nuclear weapons this will greatly change the power balance as it stands now. Although no sansctions have been imposed on India, Pakistan, and Israel. Of course, Israel has not admitted openly to having nuclear weapons except for Olmert's faux paux two weeks back.

Iran signed an agreement with the UN not to develope nuke anything. They have broken that agreement. Therefore they get sanctions. Just like North Korea.

I believe its because they believe Iran is behind a lot of the terrorists down in the middle east and if they can get Nuclear weapons then it makes the hreat even bigger and they wont be able to handle it. Just my guess from watching the news.

Stability. Israel has had nukes for some time. Their country is in a sea of people who hate them, but they havn't threatened to "wipe (anyone) off the map" They have caused wars when they thought it was just.

Iran, at this time, is not a stable region.

Because some countries have tranparent leadership while others have rogue regimes peopled by ideologues. In the main tme we should all push for zero nuclear weapons world.

Honestly I think it's unfair that some do and some don't have the sovereign rights to create nuclear energy programmes. But it is very evident that any nation with such political, social, and economic instability has the ability to create nuclear weaponry it's lights out for us all.
