Ghosts, as one calls them, do not proceed in any way in terms of their presence that depends upon the light of the physical plane. In terms again of physical matter, energy, space, and time, such entities are ubiquitous (present everywhere) just as the plane in which they reside is ubiquitous.
If they should appear to you or anyone, they choose to do so -- or -- it occurs by some phenomena and nature of the energy or space or both of that plane, which is immediate to the physical that causes a breach of the Veil.
The very reason of the ghost phenomena itself is due to an unsettlement within that individual's unwillingness to let go of physical life as he or she knew it, and because of this imbalance, there exists a wefting and warping in the very being of the individual him - or herself, added to the nature of the universes themselves to weft and warp. Life is dynamic.
Relative to the natural dynamics and order of all the planes and universes of duality, one can say that the ghost-state is considerably unbalanced, which is why they do appear to anyone anyway, and thus the appearance of one or not is simply the natural order of balance within the universes overall adjusting automatically, say, to keep of balance and alignment.
Bear in mind, the planes, heavens, universes and worlds above and beyond the physical one are as countless as the stars in the skies, and even this does not give fair account of their numbers...
On that note I ask you do you remember this? which I will paraphrase from Scripture here: "In my Father's house, there are many mansions..."
Now, their evidences still additional if stark reasons that we might import here, and let us not overlook this truth : -- some of us in the physical' simply possess 'that' ability to see across the Veil, say... and second to this, some souls who soundly reside on the other side simply have that peculiar penchant and ability, who at times will, say, slip for some reason and see across the Veil and into our physical realm -- such a one would be as startled to see you as you would him or her... You see?

Because when our eyes and ears lack coherent input due to darkness and silence, our brains are lead to extrapolate and interpolate data, causing our inherent brain functions to invent conclusions that would not normally exist under conditions of greater sensation. It's the same reason that monsters only come out when you dream... *sigh* the power of imagination is truly boundless.

People report seeing ghosts at all times of day. The real mystery is why most paranormal researchers choose night time to hunt them.

They don't only come out at night. They are around during the day as well. It could be that during the day we don't notice them because we are engaged in activities.
