I'm 40 weeks and 2 days pregnant.

I went to the hospital this morning with contractions every 5 minutes, only to have them send me home 3 hours later because I wasn't progressing. They told me to come back when they were 3 minutes apart (because I will be dilated more) The contractions seem to be very strong still, and they've been exactly 5 minutes apart since I got home from the hospital 4 hours ago, but just getting stronger.

I'm 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced and the baby is at -1 (as of 10:00 am this morning)

How long does it usually take to fully dilate and get everything going? Do you think the baby will come today...tomorrow?

I'm just really uncomfortable!

Thank you!

Try walking up and down stairs, doing housework, going for a walk and sex.

At 37 weeks and 2 days I was 95% effaced and 1 1/2 cm dilated, I was induced (preeclampsia) and told I would progress quickly and be delivering max 5 hours. I was induced for 19 hours.
and my son was at -1 bouncing on my cervix since 23 weeks.

Every single woman is different, it could be hours, days or even a week..who knows.

I have my fingers crossed for you!! Good luck!

Get up and walk around. Get on your hands and knees and scrub your floors. Have sex if your doctor hasnt banned it.

These things all help the baby drop, which puts pressure on your cervix encouraging it to thin and expand.

Theres no way to tell. You could have the baby in a couple hours, or a few days.

Iam at about station +5, with a dropped fully engaged baby (yeah, literally, he'd be practically crowning if I were dilated), but iam just now starting to efface. And iam only 36 weeks, and he's been like this since about 33 weeks.

But being that you've started into labor, so long as you stay active and keep encouraging your body to progress, it will.

at 40 weeks if they are sending you at this presentation, i would consider it inappropriate. you should have been admitted and augmented with dinoprostone or oxytocin. a post-dated pregnancy is little risky. if you want to continue pregnancy and wait till natural pains set in like they say one every 3 minutes apart, you should get biophysical profile done mainly to asess liquor and non-stress test. and repeate these every 3 days. a doppler may be needed in some cases. the chance of caesarian increases as the days progress as the liqour keeps on reducing and fetal weight keeps increasing. but then it all depends upon the physician as to how he prefers to handle post-datism.
right now you seem to be in active labour and the chances are high that you may deliver within 1-2 days. good luck.

I was 3 cm, 85% effaced on a Friday afternoon, had sex on Sunday morning and had my baby that evening.........so if you are that uncomfortable, having sex may speed up the labor and you could have your baby soon.......Congrats.

When you go into active labor you will be more than uncomfortable. 1cm is not much so it is hard to tell how long you may have.
