I think another approach to that question might be more instructive. For example, if we asked the question "What kind of president do we want to have at this point in history and what characteristics should he or she have", then we judged the available names against that, we would be operating from a sounder footing.
Some (but not all) issues which influence what kind of person we want at this point in history are as follows:
The US is the predominant military power in the world, which is a brand new situation.
The electorate of the US have, historically, been isolationist. Things are good with us, so who really cares about the rest --- all politics is local.. But, the federal government has never not been so inclined since if a politician has power, he always seems to try to find a way to use it. But now as the predominant power in the world, it seems that the lack of fear in the populace has led to a similar outlook. So, the rules of the game have changed.
Given the isolationist charactor of the public (if you believe that in a democracy they should eventually prevail) what are the major threats to this comfortable "status quo"? Terrorism? Immigration? Lawlessness? And who is where on those, or other subjects?
Without belaboring the subject, it all boils down to what we would like the US to be during this particular period in history. Militarily, we can do most anything we want to do (if you allow any military force necessary). But, if you use it, you will never be popular since nobody likes the big guy on the block (unless it is himself). Is that popularity important given the reasons you are doing what you are doing and how much you believe in it (the "religion question again"?
It seems that the US belief in democracy and liberty for everybody is becoming almost akin to a religion. But, a religion can be personal or a group endeavor. When it is personal, it is a great asset to mankind. But when it becomes a group endeavor the messianic instinct manages to pervert it.
So, whose religion is right? Those who want to bring the world back to the 12th century, or those who believe in democracy at any cost?
Between those two, there is a lot of room to choose what candidate you favor.

Ron Paul, a congressman from Texas. He's widely regarded as the only national level politician who sincerely believes in, and votes according to, the Constitution.

Someone that doesn't think about his place in history, or what sort of legacy he might leave, but gets on with the job of improving the living standards for everyone especially the least well off in society, with America put top of the agenda.

Senator Joe Biden, Governor Tom Vilsack, or Senator Tom Harkin. Any english speaking person would be better than what we've got now.

I like Colin Powell. I'm not real excited with what I've seen out there milling around the well. Hillary and obama are definitely out of the question. Not real crazy about McCain either. We'll see.

No. No. No. Democrats have no thought process. They will vote as the News Media and the DNC tell them.

If Dick Cheney was in good health and could stomach the madness he would... I think Condoleeza Rice would make a good one. She is so balanced and smart. I would like to see her in leadership position regardless...
