That was a long time converstation topic. In one episode, Hawkeye did all he could to find out. B.J. told him at the end that it stood for his mother, whose name was "Bea" and his father whose name was "Jay". I also heard it was in honor of two of the producers who had the same names. They never really did say for sure.

His full name remained a mystery throughout the series. He claimed—perhaps in jest—that he was named after his mother Bea and father Jay (hence Bea-Jay = B.J.).
