It's not an easy thing to do because of the lack of written records, maybe even impossible to do by traditional means. But maybe, now that we have DNA testing, it might be possible to learn a lot more about people's African heritage.

Haley paid out a small fortune in settlement of the claim that he "lifted" his Roots from another work, from memory I believe the plagiarised work was" African Genesis". So maybe Haley did or did not find his true roots, but genetic research has certainly "placed" persons nearer to their ancestral homelands.

The book Roots started a avalanche of families looking and searching for their origins,a lot led to dead ends because of lost identity and other hazards involved in slavery.,a few were successful through insurance companies that capitalized off of dead slaves,they kept names of slaves and slave owners.

Go back 300,000 years mate and we all came out of Africa, including you (whoever you are!). So I don't think these things matter a bugger really.
