Simple things like provide housing 100% and all other social programs they may need. It bothers me enormously that US veterans are homeless and living in poverty. Sometimes I think I may not have the whole story, would just like to know what others think.

Why would anyone want to report this question???
I honestly wanted to know what other people think.
As far as housing: I saw on TV one wounded veteran whose family, friends and neighbors put their resources together and rehabed a house for him to make it more handicapped accessible, so it raised the question with me if the government would have or should have done it for him.

Good question and the first to admit she does not know everything. Veterans living in poverty and homeless are no higher of a percentage rate then any other group. I have worked with them. And, believe it or not, there are many who prefer it that way. The whole story will never be known. I will tell you this:If you are a druggie or a drunk or a wife beater you will be taken care of better then if you are just a straight forward disabled vet. I am a disabled vet, but fortunately I did not make myself a professional hospital rat. I am able to provide for my own medical care. !00% is not something that they need. Any honorably discharged vet can go to live in the Soldiers and Sailors home in D.C. for free, even eat for free. The only catch is they have to do some work at the place. That scares many off.
We thank you for your interest and feelings.

I don't think just being a veteran should give you any special over those already in effect. Nearly any veteran can go to the VA for free medical attention. For ten years after their service they can receive money for college. Returning Vietnam Veterans received up to $300 to $500 (can't remember which) depending on how long they were there.
Noone else gets any of these things.
Before anyone accuses me of being anti-military, I'm a former United States Marine, Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

A lot of the homeless claiming to be veterans are doing just that, claiming. Have you ever heard of VA loans? Super cheap, that is how I got the house I am living in now. If you get 30% disability college is paid for 100%. There are so many VA programs out there it is amazing how anyone is claiming to be down trodden. Oh yea, being activated to war if you are reserve or guard, all your loans automatically go to 6% APR, that is federal law.
We do take care of our veterans. Being a vet myself I get rather insulted that people insinuate we are not taken care of.

Those homeless veterans are homeless by choice. But I'm not arguing with you.
As far as I'm concerned COMBAT veterans can be coddled and given everything.
As it is now, ALL veterans are taken care of with health care.
I'm afraid that we veterans, like everyone else, are getting a "welfare attitude".
That is so dangerous for a nation.
MY OPINION: Give the WOUNDED AND ALL THE COMBAT VETERANS EVERYTHING.
But if they weren't in combat, they are already getting plenty.
I have no opinion about the homeless vets.

They provided us the freedom to be on yahoo answers, even those idiots that think the VA will take care of them. There would of course be guidelines but we as a nation treat our vets and thier families very poorly. And yes there are some vets who choose homelessness, but they still need that psychological help to help them deal with modern society and a world at war with itself, but not in combat.Think of the POW/MIA's,thousands and thousands,WW2,Korea,Vietnam,and even Desert Storm(Scott Spicher).Families not knowing

Yes America should do more to take care of its war veterans....instead of saying one thing and doing another. The US promised free health care for life for all WWII veterans. It has diminished so much in the last couple of decades that it's a shame that these people are treated this way. It's the same way for our Korean, Viet Nam, Gulf War veterans, as well as the veterans from the current wars going on now.

Personally I don't think there's enough we can do for our vetrans. It sickens me that if they are lucky enough to return home that there aren't jobs waiting and the transition made alot easier for themselves and their families. So many come back disabled and with some form of illnesses from exposure to things that effects them for the rest of their life and not enough is done to help them or their family. There's no excuse for any vetran to be homeless after being willing to die for the freedom we enjoy. They should be treated with the honor they deserve for all they sacrificed.

Why should we provide housing for our veterans. They are capable of securing their own housing. Veterans have the VA, get preferential treatment in some jobs, and have their education benefits. If you quit your job what do you get? Not a damn thing.
