Do you count the partridge and the pear tree as separate gifts?

What about the maids? Since they are a'milking, you get some animal along with them.

On the other hand, since the lords, ladies and maids are all people, you would be arrested for slave trading.

That would depend on how you interpret the song. The usual interpretation is "a partridge in a pear tree on the 1st day, 2 turtle-doves on the 2nd day, 3 french hens on the 3rd day" and so on. However, I have heard some people interpret the poem (much more expensively!) as "a partridge in a pear tree" EACH DAY, AS WELL AS, 2 turtle-doves on EACH DAY (days 2-12), AS WELL AS 3 french hens on EACH DAY (days 3-12). Number of gifts for the 1st interpretation is 1+2+3+...12. Number of gifts for the second, more expensive, intrepretation is (12*1)+(11*2)+(10*3)+...(1*12)

You would receive 364 gifts by the end of the song. If you listen closely to the words, you receive a partridge each of the twelve days (12), two French hens for each of eleven days (22), three calling birds for ten days (30)...etc.
