Well, the antidisestab-thingy is a popular one, especially among people who like simple answers...
"smiles" is said to be the longest word (being a mile between 2 s's) ;)
But according to Ross Eckler (who would know, having studied words for longer than I've been alive), "It is impossible to give an answer to the question, 'What is the longest solidly written word in the English Language?' that will satisfy everyone. The longest words that one is at all likely to encounter in general text are the twenty-two-letter deinstitutionalization and counterrevelutionaries.
"Data on words of eighteen letters or more in Kucera and Francis suggest that each added letter halves the frequency of occurance; for every 100 eighteen letter words there are about 50 nineteen letter ones, 25 twenty letter ones, and so on."
Generally, I can tell you that the longest words in English tend to be scientific or medical in nature, because of the way these words are formed.
