It's kind of an "open secret" in Hollywood that certain celebrities are gay. Suppose you'd been a romantic lead in several films and TV shows, do you think coming out the closet would have much an impact on your film career? Or would it just be business as usual?

Don't wanna know about Rock Hudson and Monty Clift, btw - they were all closeted.

Just to clarify, I'm talking specifically about romantic leads. Say you're a (just for, um, example) George Clooney or a Tom Cruise. Would you still get the same roles? Would you have anything to lose by coming out?

It would probably have some effect. Look what Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic raging has done - but "Apocalypto" is still doing well in cinemas.

And it might depend on just what their 'coming out' included! If a 'super-butch' action hero announced he was gay and preferred to dress in woman's clothes - BYE!!
How would the Oscar people cope with him turning up with a male partner, while wearing fake boobs and a dress that put the real actresses to shame!!??
How are they going to act next time (Sir) Elton John gets nominated for a music Oscar and he arrives with David Furnish(?) his 'civil union' partner!?!?! [Would it be 'fair' to treat him differently from a hetero star with his 'live-in' female partner, let alone a hetero married couple?]

Like another ? re a black or female President - I would hope that the 'peepul' would go by their acting ability!

I remember reading an article a few years back on this topic (can't remember where). In it a gay actor (yes, still closeted!) made the point that the closeted gays all deserved 'Oscars' or equivalents for their successes in playing so many 'straight' roles. What was REALLY needed, was getting 'straight' actors to try out portraying gay people - and see how they did!!

Several celebrities have come out of the closet lately and it doesn't seem to be hurting them at all. If we were back in the 1940's or 1950's these actors careers may take a downhill run but more and more people are becoming open minded and accepting of openly gay actors.

Yes, of course it would ruin their careers. Hollywood is about as closeted as you can get, and the gay stars are probably in permanent fear of being outed. Look at how it destroyed Ricky Martin's career and George Michael's. and they are pop singers.

It all depends on who the person is. I mean...people shouldn't judge them by their sexual orientation, but it happens!

It wouldn't ruin it, but it would change it forever.

Your question Ruin their career
Not today the fools cheer about it
For sure John Wayne as my hero would have never made another movie that I would see
You can enjoy it I think it is sick when it is out in public.
