There would have been no Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett..and many Floyd heads would argue that the Barrett stage of Floyd's development was the most creative musically..before they became more 'commercial'. I guess you prefer the Gilmour years..and he was(is) a great guitarist and singer..the sound of Floyd after 1969. Apparently Syd was a destructive genius and after his departure,,roger Walters seized control with a more rational approach.. making Floyd more accessible to the music masses.

Well, it could be coincedental, and nobody can be for sure. But there are things I can point out. Although Syd Barret was kicked out before Pink Floyd scored hits, he was influential. First, his absence brought on David Gilmour, who later became the voice and the signature guitar sound of Pink Floyd.

Also, Roger Waters wrote many popular songs with Syd in mind. For example, "Were you Were Here" and "Shine on your Crazy Diamond." And other popular hits such as Comfortably Numb and Brain Damage talk about going crazy and doing drugs.

So, although Syd didn't have a different connection to their success, he did have an indirect influence. It was his LSD abuse and schizophrenia that influenced the lyrics of many Pink Floyd hits.

The band just evolved . The music they did in Syds time was still revolutionary for the time. See Emily Play and Arnold layne were classics of the time. But they just got it together after he left and with Rick Wright, Gilmour and Mason and Waters. Personally im in the Water's camp opposed to Gilmour but i still respect the early evolvings of the band. Without Syds influence they wouldnt of become the band they are. Meddle really took the band into their sound we know and love and ofc Dark side just cemented it. By the way im off to see Roger Waters (again) next year at Earls Court! Cant wait!
