Hi:

I am just curious, but I would rather draw my own designs to have made into rubber stamps. I would sort of like to see if I could have them made with the photopolymer stuff so that they are basically transparent. I am sort of curious about also how much a unit like that would cost for a modest rubber stamping business. Any information is much appreciated.

First, the company called Ready Stamps
http://www.polyclay.com/ready.htm
will create a plate of rubberstamps from your own drawings, photocopies, or any sufficiently contrasty b&w images you send them (you then cut apart the individual images from the stamp sheet the way you want, and mount them if you want). (Ready Stamps is actually a part of the Cerebral Palsy Association, so it's a good cause too.) Or call them toll free at 877-267-4341.

(We polymer clayers also always ask for the "matrix" when we order the stamps, which turns the stamps into molds as well... so be sure and ask for plate + rubber + matrix, if you want).

You can fill a 7 x 9" paper with as many images as you can squeeze in, leaving enough room to cut between them. The darker/bolder the lines, the better the stamps (IOW, images with lots of little fine lines won't make as good a stamp).
Check out the page above for lots more info on the cost (about $32 + 5 s/h), tips on making your images, etc.

As for making photopolymer stamps, check out this page at my site for some info about that:

This depends on a few things...a ) where you are b) what you call cheap c) what kind of rubber stamps you want. If you are in the UK, try e bay. Unmounted stamps are going to be cheaper to post but you will need to use with an acryllic base (or a cd case will do the job in most cases). Bulk buying is cheaper. Good luck . There is a shop called The Range which has outlets selling cheap rubber stamps - commercial cutsie stuff, not arty.

Not sure about the size you're looking at, but you can make a small rubber stamp with an Xacto and a pink rubber eraser. If you wanted to sell them, you could probably dress it up so it looks nicer.

You can buy uncut rubber at the larger craft stores (Hobby Lobby, Michaels') and cut it yourself. They have all the supplies for that back by the Prisma Pencils and Painting Supplies.
