Foundation is intended to create the illusion of smooth, velvety skin. It gives any face a polished look and an older face a more youthful appearance. Foundation is a light layer of color that can help hide blotchiness and visible facial veining. It also creates a smoother surface for the application of powder cosmetics such as blush and eyeshadow.

When you are young, your facial skin is smooth and an even color. Young people can get away with just spot covering small flaws with concealer such as a pimple. As you age, however, and you face begins to show sun damage, you will have a more blotchy skin tone. Older faces tend to have darker or redder color around the nose and mouth and veins show more.

Foundation is to even out the uneven skin tones as well as covering up any blemishes. Cover up and concealers are for doing just spot covering. Some people prefer to use both to aid in the elimination blemishes. However oil-based foundations and other cosmetics clog your pores and actually create blemishes. If your reason for using cover ups and foundations is for concealing blemishes do this: apply a really good mosturizer all over your face and put extra on the area to be concealed. Get a good foundation that is more yellow in color than pink and apply to area. Then apply powder over your face to give a softer look to your face and if used after all make up is applied it will actually help lock in any colors such as blush or eye shadow. However, if you are wanting to cover up dark circles under your eyes use a pink-toned cover up instead of a yellow-toned foundation since the yellow tones will enhance the blue appearance of the dark circles.

Foundation can even out your skin tone, cover minor blemishes, and help blush stay in place and not wear off as easily. A good way to apply it and try it out is to get a makeup-applying sponge, the finer the pores the better. Wet it with water, and apply equal amounts (a few drops each) of ordinary skin moisturing lotion and of foundations. Apply this mixture evenly over your face. Choose a color of foundation that is close to your natural skin tone or a little bit lighter; too much of a contrast will not look natural.

foundation is for evening out your skin tone and covering minor flaws. like if you have a blemish, wrinkles, acne scars, there's different types of foundations for each problem to make them less noticable to have the effect of more flawless skin. but if you have bad acne and cake on foundation you can totally tell and it looks bad. also, you should blend the foundation in with your neck and get a makeup proffessional to find the CLOSEST color to your skin color so your face won't look fake.

Too many women slather foundation over their entire face and necks. Unless you are a TV newscaster or on Broadway, you don't need full coverage. Instead, apply foundation only on those parts with discoloration. Common areas that need coverage are around the eyes, nose and chin. Consider using a tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation.
