Why does it bother them so much?

It protects them from what they feel are their own inadequacies. They feel weak somehow, insecure. Try not to personalize their behavior. It's about them not you. On the other side of the coin. Some people act as if they were "all that" to protect themselves from a feeling of inadequacy, or weakness, or insecureity also. People who do this often treat others with contempt and no one likes to be subject to that.

Jealousy!...They think you are becoming better than them and you have become a threat so they need to spread lies about you or like you said attack you...either alone or in front of everyone to humilliate you so they would be back at the top....What you need to do when that happens is just ignored them and maybe say something very short, but dont show them that you are upset...because then you would be the bigger person...Good luck!

the ones that "think" they are all that usually look down on others ......which is really wrong. God made all of us equal. No one is any better that the rest. Why they attack them, I don't really have an answer for that. But probably because the ones that ''think'' they are all that, are usually snobby and rood.
