My mother is returning to school, bless her soul, and she has a very weak background in math and has asked me to help her learn math. Can anyone recommend some good websites that cover basic math? Pre-algebra and arthmetic would be best.

It is better to find review books instead of using websites. Review books will be more indepth and will contain more practice problems. Websites will not help much.

Or...you can always tutor her yourself.

Bless her soul indeed!
How about http://www.math.com/
http://amby.com/educate/math/
http://www.videomathtutor.com
A good live tutor (you?) is always best, but properly designed tutoring websites and educational game softwares are the next best thing, because this can give you instruction tailored to your input, it never loses patience or gets tired or has a bad day, and it's available any time day or night. Check out the educational software on http://www.worldstart.com. Even tho they're a commercial site and we're not supposed to endorse commercial sites here on YA, I'm recommending them because they have some good educational games at good discount prices. One good thing about computer assisted instruction is that looking at a video screen can induce an altered state of relaxed awareness (alpha) in which it is very easy to learn. That's why people get absorbed in TV shows, video games, and hanging out online.
